In this article we will discuss the Calculation of CBM under LCL sea shipment. What is cbm in shipping ?

How to calculate cbm in lcl export shipments ?

what does cbm mean in shipping ?

Basically, we need calculation of CBM for shipping something or exporting. If the shipment is a Less Container Load (LCL), a freight forwarder charges freight on the basis of CBM.

The method of calculation of volume of cargo under sea LCL shipment

CBM means Cubic Meter is a standard unit of measurement used to determine the volume of a shipment. It calculates the space in a shipment occupies whether transported by sea, air, or land. This measurement helps shipping companies to determine how much space a shipment will occupies.

Actually, the total weight of the shipment should not exceed 1 ton on the basis of CBM. If the weight of the shipment is above 1 ton, the volume of the shipment is treated on the basis of weight. After all, Freight forwarders charges LCL rate on the basis of CBM or per weight of 1 ton whichever is higher. We calculate CBM by multiplying length, width and height of packages of goods.

Use the formula: CBM = L × W × H
Where L = Length of Cube/package/carton
W = Width of Cube/package/carton
H = Height of Cube/package/carton

For example, if the length, height and width of a cargo is 2 meters, 4 meters and 2 meters respectively, the volume of the shipment is 2 X 4 X 2 = 16 CBM. If freight forwarder rate is USD 100 per CBM, the rate will be 16 CBM X USD 100 per CBM = USD 1600.

If the weight of the said package is 7 tons, the freight on LCL is calculated on the basis of weight. That is, 7 tons X USD 100 = USD 700.
